The pneumococcal immunisation programme forat-riskgroups
The Department of Health recommends the national pneumococcal immunisation programme for people aged 65 or over and those in clinical risk groups (view the risk groups) because for those people, pneumococcal infections can be more serious. The NHS provides the vaccine for eligible patients. Your doctor or nurse will determine if you are eligible.
How often do I need vaccination?
Certain individuals may require an additional dose, this will depend on their medical condition. Your doctor or nurse will be able to provide more information on how often you need the vaccine.
Are there any side effects with this vaccination?
Like all vaccines and medicines, this vaccine is associated with certain side effects, although not everybody gets them. Further information can be found in the patient information leaflets and by speaking to your healthcare professional.
Before deciding whether you want to be vaccinated or not, ask your healthcare professional for more information about the national immunisation programme (incl. eligibility); the complications it could help protect you from and the need for vaccination in your case.
