MSD manufactures one of the pneumococcal vaccines recommended in the national immunisation programme for certain patients.

Who's at risk?

If you have certain medical conditions, you could be at increased risk of pneumococcal infections turning into something more serious, like pneumoniasepticaemia (blood poisoning) and meningitis.

Diabetes managed by medication   >

Adults with diabetes are estimated to be 3-6 times more likely of pneumoccocal infection turning into something serious such as meningitis, septicaemia and pneumonia than healthy adults.

65 and over   >

Even if you feel fit and well if you are aged 65 or over you are at increased risk of pneumoccocal infection turning into something more serious.

Ages 2 - 64 with at risk conditions*   >

*Identified clinical risk groups:
  • Asplenia or dysfunction of the spleen
  • Chronic respiratory disease
  • Immunosuppression (having a weakened immune system)
  • Chronic heart disease
  • Having cochlear implants
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Cerebrospinal fluid leaks
  • Chronic liver disease
  • Diabetes managed by medication
  • Occupational exposure to metal fumes e.g. welders (taking into account exposure control measures in place)
